Education
- Before you begin the process, consider the following:
Ensure
that the degree program you select is accredited; degree programs are
accredited not schools or university. Contact National Architectural
Accrediting Board (NAAB) for a list of accredited degree programs (202)
783-2007 - http://www.naab.org.
Be sure
to understand the three basic types of professional degrees as outlined
previously - two targeted for high school students - 1) Bachelor
of Architecture - 5 years (70+ schools), or the 2) Master of Architecture
following a preprofessional architecture degree - 4 + 2 years (50+ schools).
And one best suited for degreed candidates from another discipline -
3) Master of Architecture - 3+ years (65+ school). Each degree type
has its own advantages and limitations, but consider which is best suited
for you since it will help narrow your choices.
Learn
what are typical courses offered in most, if not all, architecture programs
- courses in design, structures, systems, graphics/drawing, architectural
history, general education, computer, site, professional practice, programming,
and architecture electives.
You know the
degree programs, the different degree paths, the list of architectural
programs to choose from, and the typical courses offered, but do you
know what is most important to you when making this important decision.
The key to determine
what is most important is to think about the various criteria in the
three attributes listed below. Take some time to think about answers
to the questions posed and write them down.
By going
through this process, you will be better matched with your eventual
college choice and be more confident in your decision. In addition,
you will find as you develop criteria by which to base your decision,
certain degree formats and universities will surface as logical choices.
The three
attributes are:
You,
Institution,
and Academic
Unit.
